5 Tips You Need to Know About Traning Your Staff

Organising a training program and implementing staff training can be a daunting experience for business owners and employers.

You will find that new staff don’t necessarily have experience in this line of work. Therefore they require intensive upskilling and training to get to a level where they can be of real benefit to your operation.
So how do we reduce this burden on business?
Outsourcing your training needs to an external training provider can be really beneficial. These organisations, called RTOs (registered training organisations), are specialised in certain industries such as Retail or Transport, with industry professionals employed to work with your staff whilst you work on your business.

When considering business training, here are 5 things you should know:

1.    RTO’s allow you access to government funding through their accreditation. Each RTO specialises in a certain area of training
2.    Funding per employee can be up to $4,000 depending on their experience levels, start date of employment and other qualifications e.g. a new full-time employee with no prior experience or qualifications may be a good candidate for the ‘New Apprenticeship scheme’;
3.    The ‘New apprenticeship scheme’ has other benefits, such as payroll tax exemptions for the employer in NSW, for eligible trainees;
4.    There are no limits to the number of trainees your business can hire – this is dependent on the needs of your business;
5.    The funding provided to you by the Federal Government for the trainee is then paid to you, not the RTO. In some cases the training provider may also be supported by the Government. The Government funds can be used to pay the RTO for their training services, allowing you to train staff at no extra cost.

RTOs are business themselves and therefore understand the internal problems that training new staff can place on your business. So, how does this work? How much does a training program cost? Where do I find an RTO for my industry?

An industry consultant can help you choose the RTO that is right for your business. Industry consultants have the experience needed to match your business with the RTO, which is, in fact, another business.
Generally the industry consultant will receive a fee from the training provider. This makes using an industry consultant a ‘no-risk’ scenario in terms of cost.
